Human Papillo VirusHPV is blamed for virtually all cases of cervical cancer, which kills 250,000 women globally every year. In 1999, Howett and Kreider made a breakthrough: They reported that HPV, HIV, and herpes simplex II viruses could be effectively killed by a topical agent sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), a detergent commonly found in shampoos and body washes. "The significance of our discovery is the insight that SDS may have practical application for use by women. It not only works to destroy these viruses, but it is ten times less toxic to human cells than nonoxynol-9, the current agent used to destroy sperm and other STD agents," Howett said. In addition, she and Kreider discovered that unlike nonoxynol-9, the detergent can prevent human papillomavirus from being transmitted because of its additional properties as a protein denaturant it actually makes the proteins break apart.
